Sometimes, even a kind gesture can lead to problems. Young Zachary Randolph was working behind the counter at Great American Cookies in the Katy Mills Mall in Katy, Texas, when an officer walked up and asked for a cheesecake brownie. Instead of charging the officer, Zachary gave it to him free in appreciation of his service to the public, and he would cover the cost of it out of his own pay.
That was definitely a kind gesture, and the officer really appreciated it. He thanked Zachary and walked away. That’s also when the problems started. The couple behind the officer ALSO wanted a free brownie. When Zachary explained the reason he gave it to the officer free of charge, they started yelling, calling him a racist, and they threatened to hit him.
A co-worker was able to calm the couple down, but Zachary was suspended from work for a week without pay.
His mom posted about the incident on Facebook. That post went viral, and several TV stations interviewed Zachary about it. Of course, management at the cookie shop heard about it, did some more investigation and quickly lifted his suspension, with an apology.
An official statement from the company read: “It was never an issue that he purchased a brownie for a police officer, but rather the events that unfolded with another customer in line at the time. However, after further review, we realize that the employee was in fact in the right. The corrective action and suspension were reversed immediately and we hope to connect with him today.”
After hearing about all this, the Katy Police Department had to do something also. They publicly acknowledged Zachary’s kindness to the department and its officers and awarded him a certificate, showing that even when things get bad, good things can come of it.
